HUMBERT @ --->POPSCENE! Hialeah's indie rock renegades hit the DaDa Danceteria this week. I am especially looking forward to this show because I've heard so many good things about this band, but have yet to see them play live. With that in mind, here's what Not Lame Records has to say about this ecclectic Hia-fuckin-leah quartet! jon ist rad @ 12:13 PM + + + The POPSCENE vs. POPTOPIA show was amazing. DaDa was packed inside and out all night. Billy Boloby put on a great (if not a bit late) show that featured their own brand of "broadway" on the Danceteria. Whirlaway played a fantastic set, stretching the music 'til after 2AM! Thanks to everyone who attended and made it a special night. Sorry you missed the after-show party at The Saloon in Pompano. The night wouldn't have been complete without a beer for the road and a little Journey on the jukebox! jon ist rad @ 9:09 AM + + + POPSCENE vs. POPTOPIA II It's fuzzpop and '70s-era Jam this Saturday at --->POPSCENE when WHIRLAWAY and BILLY BOLOBY get together for a special grudge match with DJs Mana and Sloan pushing buttons and spinning plastic 'til 2AM! Catch Whirlaway the night before when they camp it up at the Cure Trubute at I/O Lounge. "When I think of these two bands, one is reminded of the epitomal show at Kyoto's Shibui Palace when punk legends The Babymakers and Dolemite's Crotch exploded in a head-on collision of sonic sodomy." - POPMATTERS jon ist rad @ 11:10 AM + + + --->POPSCENE DOES RESPECTABLE STREET It was a fantastic show at West Palm Beach's oldest alternative venue. A large, very enthusiastic crowd. The Freakin' Hott were great as usual, as were the Legends of Rodeo who debuted many new songs. Summer Blanket closed the show and got a wonderful response from fans. Check out the New Times Street Team for pics from the night. Thanks to Steve Rullman who helped set-up the show and had it running smoothly. Popscene returns to DaDa this Saturday! jon ist rad @ 10:56 AM + + + SUMMER BLANKET CD RELEASE this Saturday at Respectable Street in West Palm Beach. For one night only, --->P O P S C E N E will move to the spacious club to co-host a great night of music. With the help of The Wormhole, tonight's show will be one to remember, with special guests Legends of Rodeo and The Freakin' Hott. Plus, the Popscene and Wormhole DJs will be spinning their usual brand of indie pop, electro, no-wave, soul, and rock throughout the night. Doors open at 8:30pm for those with $5. The Summer Blanket release on Pop Up Records will be specially priced at a mere $5, but don't worry, this is no rip-off e.p.! You're getting a full-length record for half price this night only. And remember... dress sexy, 'cause Keith likes it when you do... jon ist rad @ 6:07 AM + + + So last Saturday wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I introduced some Hall & Oats to the regular rotation, as well as some tracks off the Lost in Translation soundtrack. Timb stepped in at the last minute to entertain the crowd with his own brand of glam-folk. He brought some people over from the coffehouse he had played earlier. Unfortunately, the Dada management stiffed me on the money. Fuckers... the place is too small to have a decent band night, plus, it has a very cheesy reputation, something I am trying the dispell. jon ist rad @ 4:50 AM + + + It's things like THIS that make me miss San Francisco more and more... to think that people pray for a show like Death Cab/Mates of State to come by FLA once a year... spoiled? jaded? bitter? me? naaaahhhhhh... jon ist rad @ 1:51 AM + + + Some thoughts on the Death Cab/Mates of State show: Death Cab for Cutie was good, but the sound sucked and every song kind of blended together... not in a good way. Mates of State I had seen as a local band in the 'Yay Area... their songs always sound alike and could sometimes benefit from steadier drumming instead of all the frenetic beats. Their sound was much better. Afterwards, I DJ'ed for a while at the Lounge until Bitchwax sneered at me... she's scary! It sucks that Florida is so spread out... the turnout was great but I hardly recognized anyone at the show. Where are these people when Popscene is happening? jon ist rad @ 1:44 AM + + + On Sunday, I'll be spinning tracks from the soon-to-be-released debut from Summer Blanket, as well as sitting in on drums. I'm hoping we can get a few more people to fill in on bass and keys. Local rising star, Helen Horal (tracy chapman, sarah mclachlan) will open the show. Check out the flier! jon ist rad @ 8:06 PM + + + Nothing going on this weekend... just me pushing buttons... woopie... last week sucked, considering the amount of promotion (radio, newspaper, emails) I was surprised at the lack of attendies. Two really good bands, BIG COLLAPSE and SALEM ... I heard from their booking agent that they had a good time... jon ist rad @ 5:30 AM + + + |
